UMM

Experimental Ghent-based popband UMM asked us to create visuals to accompany their live performances. Before we could even utter ‘umm’ Kru was part of the band. We invaded their backstage, set up a projector, plugged in our keyboards and played our freshly developed web-based visual instrument while the band blasted on stage.

The visual instrument consists of a variety of exciting animations that can be manipulated at will to give to each song an organic yet unique visual component during each individual performance. It is expandable to be used for future songs and even suited to create full-fledged music videos if the band would be so inclined. The illustrations were done by the talented Emily Lefèbre.

Orchids

Orchids is not what it seems like. For the first sight Orchids is a usual, old-fashioned handbook about the sorts and care of orchids. Closely observed one discovers a completely different content. Compilation of texts, interviews, imagery, and everything connected to the 5th seasonal exhibition of a New York based gallery, The Artist’s Institute parasites the old book. Just as elegantly and aggressively as orchids do. The design process happened all the way around as well: the given layout of the original book had to be filled in on the subtlest possible way.

Orgarithm 34

Orgarithm 34 is a small creature living in the servers of northern Europe. Compared to the other specimens of his family he is quite small weighting just bit over 51MB. As common with other creatures in the artificial-kingdom his developmental rate is quite slow but still visible to the naked eye.

He starts his day the moment he is observed by humans from the analog world. He eats Twitter data and has a special appetite for whats popular and sensationalist. We could say that he lives in commensalismic symbiosis with Twitter– he does not affect twitter in any bad way but desperately needs it to survive.

He uses its tentacles to catch food and to absorb more data for its core. The creatures metamorphosis is solely based on the data he eats, it uses components from the gathered food to fish himself more of it.

In this early state still harmless to humans.

KTKDK

The Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts based in Tallinn, Estonia is a collaboration of four different institutions: Tallinn University, University of Tartu, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Estonian Academy of Arts. Our task was to develop a fresh yet formal all-encompassing visual identity combining the looks of the singular schools. Starting from the already existing logo’s we created an ever-changing modular pattern. That was applied on the website and used in the logo design, the pattern system serves as the basis for the modern, clear, yet still curiously unique identity of the institute.

00;”>For a decade now Sloow tapes has brought exceptional musical experiences to both Belgian and international audiences. In 2016 they decided to expand their activities, and began a series of book publications. These limited edition booklets include a broad variety of curious, carefully selected content: from the complete bibliography of the infamous Cold Turkey Press to the memoires of important personalities within avant-garde music scene. KRU set the character of this series with a colorful cover, a comfortable format, and a sober typography.

Combs

Combs. They are subtle, they are functional, they go by unnoticed. During this project our research into the design history of the comb led us to reinterpreting the comb as an lost evolutionary strain of its supposed nemesis: the flea. We described our own prototypes as an extinct flea species, thereby exploring both the organic functionality and usage of the comb. All sketches and prototypes were ultimately collected in a booklet that emulated scientific publications.
